Global Cultures: Costa Rica Banners Bring a Pop of Color to SRU Campus

The SRU Fiber Art class students in the first three weeks of the semester collaborated with the art students at the Escuela de Artes Plásticas Universidad de Costa Rica (School of Art, University of Costa Rica) on a project focusing on Costa Rica. The project is overseen by professors Alberto Murillo Herrera and Tara Hidalgo, who both teach art at the Universidad de Costa Rica.

Students communicated via chat apps with their partners to learn about life, history, culture, art, and nature in Costa Rica. The use of various apps allowed for more spontaneous and conversation-based research. The SRU students received many pictures and videos depicting Costa Rica from their partner’s perspective. This frequent communication allowed for a more in-depth and personal understanding of the country; the goal was to avoid the internet-based cliché information. After the research concluded, students went to work in co-designing 16 unique banners. Then, the banners were executed by the ARU students in the Fiber Art studio.

“We hope that all of campus enjoys the colorful display of the artworks.” -Barbara Westman, Professor of Printmaking and Fiber Art

You can view these beautiful banners around the campus walkways where they are hanging on lamp posts. To stay up to date on all things art at Slippery Rock University, make sure to follow their social media on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
